The Program in Cinema Studies at Northeastern University is unique in the Boston area in offering a broad interdisciplinary curriculum.
In Fall 2012 the College of Arts, Media and Design will initiate a new direction in Cinema Studies, focusing on media and screen studies. This will bring together faculty previously in Cinema Studies and Communication Studies to offer a unique and important approach to understanding the relationship between media and culture.
Our core faculty offers a wide range of expertise in media studies and screen studies with a clear commitment to the broader project of cultural studies.
The courses in this program will examine the historical, social, and political contexts of media forms and texts, as well as a range of critical and theoretical approaches. Topics include: critical television studies; popular music; theories of media and culture; technology and culture; film theory; information, documents and data. More broadly our courses will educate majors in the skill of critical thinking; to think critically is to ask questions about what is assumed to be real, valued, and significant in our culture.
Our production courses include screenwriting, narrative filmmaking, and directing. Advanced students can also pursue independent production projects for credit.
We believe that simply knowing how to use a device is not good enough for people who will be employed and living in a world of technology and postindustrial knowledge work. Therefore, in partnership with other units in the college this program contributes to the experiential education for which Northeastern University has become internationally known.
