Boston Film Scene

As a cultural metropolis, Boston offers access to almost every kind of film. In addition to the commercial cinemas, the following institutions have important film programs:

  • the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston
  • These are complemented by frequent special programs at area universities and public libraries. The Boston area also boasts several independent movie theaters that show second-run features and movie classics.

The annual Boston Film Festival, the New England Film and Video Festival, the Jewish Film Festival, the Independent Film Festival, the the Boston Documentary Film Screenings, the Gay/Lesbian Film Festival, and the Women in Film Festival have become major venues for the showing of new work. Local filmmakers are also showcased through Central Productions.

Boston area production companies have semi-annual open studio days sponsored by the Boston Filmmakers Collaborative when students can visit their organizations and learn about local production facilities and internship opportunities. Student Activities offers discount passes to Showcase Cinemas through the NU Arts Ticket Center in the lobby of the Ell Building.
