The Graduate Certificate in Cinema Studies in unique in the Boston area in that it emphasizes the theory and critcism of film and related media. It is intended as a complement to existing M.A. and PhD programs in the College of Arts and Sciences. Students take four electives from the list. Hands-on production experience is offered in two of the electives: HST 239 and JRN 309. Students pursuing the Graduate Certificate in Cinema Studies can profit from Northeastern's placement in Boston, with its many film festivals, art house venues for film exhibition, and active filmmaking scene.

Students from any discipline in the graduate school of Arts and Sciences are allowed to take 8 graduate credits outside of their discipline. In order to qualify for the graduate certificate in Cinema Studies, students must be enrolled in an MA or Ph.D. program in one of the following departments of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences: English, History, Journalism, or Sociology.
