Dual Major

The dual major can prepare you for a future in commercial video production, network or cable TV, film distribution, advertising, or advanced graduate work in cultural studies or cinema studies.

Students typically apply to the dual major in Cinema Studies in the spring quarter of their freshman year. To date, dual majors between Cinema Studies and Communication Studies, Cinema Studies and Journalism, Cinema Studies and English, Cinema Studies and Modern Languages, Cinema Studies and Philosophy, as well as Cinema Studies and Theatre have been approved.

Requirements

Requirements for the dual major are listed at the website of the

New and perspective students should choose the most recent catalog. Current students can check their progress by doing a degree audit at the undergraduate student portal.

Students pursuing a B.S. dual major complete the B.S. core.

Students pursuing a B.A. dual major complete the B.A. core for specified programs, including the language requirement.

Please note that two core requirements will automatically be satisfied within the Cinema Studies dual major, since Film Theory (CIN 350) as well as several of our international cinema courses satisfy core requirements.

Experiential Learning

Cinema Studies has an experiential learning requirement that is normally satisfied by the junior/senior seminar, CIN 500 or 550. However, students are strongly encouraged to pursue elective courses in experiential learning. Cinema Studies offers the following experiential courses: CIN U446,500, 550, 650, 941, 942, 943, 944, 945, 946, 947, 948, 949.

With the approval of the Committee on Cinema Studies, directed studies or independent study courses may, in some cases, be substituted for elective courses.
